Jean Anne Johnson Obituary
June 10, 1932 - April 10, 2014 Jean passed peacefully on April 10, surrounded by her husband and children. Jean was born June 10, 1932 in York, Pennsylvania. Her early years were spent in Decatur, Georgia, then moved to Pasadena, California as a teenager with her parents. Jean graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a BA in Education, was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and active in the Student Senate. In 1956 Jean (Newham) married Basil Johnson and settled in Arcadia in 1959. They joined the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel, 1962. She was a member of the St. Mary's Guild, taught Sunday School for 8 years and was in the Alter Guild in excess of 40 years, serving as directress three times. Jean was active in the PTA at Santa Anita Elementary School, Dana Jr. High School and Arcadia High School. She served as PTA President at all three schools. Jean also was a volunteer at the High School registration and enrollment activities, served as a part time secretary for the English Department at Arcadia High School and for 19 years she was the volunteer advisor for the Princesses, the banner carriers of the Arcadia High School Marching Band. Known as "Mom J" to the 171 girls she worked with over the years, Jean donated countless hours as advisor, made beaded headbands and put together the Apache Headresses the girls wore. Jean was extremely artistic and was known at her Church and the High School for her crafts, decorations and costumes. Jean actively supported her children during the 20 year span of their involvement in the Arcadia schools, never missing a single parade, band tournament, half time cheer leader and band show, Drum Major competition and dance recital, and continued her support with her grandchildren when possible. During Jean and Basil's 57 years of marriage, Jean traveled extensively with her family throughout the entire world. Jean is survived by her husband Basil, daughters Debi and Denise, son Richard, step daughter Susan, grandchildren Krista, Andrew, Catherine, Lizzy, Bradley and Drew, and the large extensive family of sisters and brothers-in-law, as well as nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 10th at the Church of Our Savior, 535 W. Roses Rd, San Gabriel, at 11:00 am, with organ prelude at 10:45am and a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. The family requests that instead of flowers, people make a contribution to their favorite charity.
