John Nyberg Obituary
Nyberg, John Edward (75) Of Newport Beach, CA died Sunday, July 29, 2001, of complications related to Parkinson's Disease at a Pasadena convalescent hospital. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 18, at Cabot & Sons, in Pasadena, CA. A picnic in the park will follow to celebrate his life. Mr. Nyberg was born May 8, 1926, in Kansas City, MO to Dorothy Louise Ritzler and John Charles Nyberg. At the age of three he moved to Pasadena, CA. He attended Lincoln and Jefferson Elementary Schools, and Marshall Junior High School. At Marshall, he was on the baseball and tennis teams, and he was senior editor for "The Marshallite", the school newspaper. He attended Pasadena Junior College, supporting himself as a driver for UPS, and graduated in 1944. After graduation, Mr. Nyberg enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was sent to Florida and Texas for flight training. WWII came to an end before he was assigned overseas and he spent the remainder of his enlistment at Smokey Air Base in Salina, KS. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 and returned to Pasadena. In 1947 Mr. Nyberg entered the University of California at Berkeley in the School of Architecture. He was the first student in eight years at the School of Architecture to earn a Phi Beta Kappa key. He graduated from Cal in 1950 and received his professional license in 1952. Soon after, he and Harold J. Bissner, Jr. opened an architectural firm in Pasadena, CA, a partnership that endured for over 30 years. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, a regent of the American Registered Architects, and a long time member of the the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Mr. Nyberg was licensed to practice in over 20 states and worked on many corporate projects throughout the country and internationally as well. The firm of Nyberg and Bissner received numerous local and national awards for their design excellence. In the early 1980's Mr. Nyberg moved to Newport Beach and set up a practice with his son, Kevin, working on school projects in San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties. He retired in 1999. Mr. Nyberg enjoyed playing outdoor sports with his children, coaching little league baseball and basketball, tennis, hiking, biking, camping, fly fishing, reading, going to plays, and dancing. He especially loved playing cards and games of chance. He is survived by sons Christopher Nyberg and wife Meryline of Orinda, CA, Kevin J. Nyberg and wife Katherine of Aliso Viejo, CA, John K. Nyberg and Nahid Dehnadi of Irvine, CA, Frank P. Nyberg and wife Anna of Palmdale, CA; daughters Wendy Fisher and husband Robert of Atascadero, CA and Robin Fehsenfeld of Eugene, OR; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. A memorial donation may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation at 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Miami, FL 33136.
