Kim Weiskopf Obituary

Weiskopf, Kim
April 10, 1947 - April 22, 2009
Kim Robert Weiskopf, 62, award-winning television comedy writer, has passed away after an eighteen month battle with pancreatic cancer... a battle he waged with great courage, dignity and of course, his unique sense of humor. Kim died peacefully at home early Wednesday, April 22nd, in the embrace of his loving wife and soulmate of 29 years, Jody, and his adoring daughter, Kate. Also at Kim's side were other family members, as well as angel/caregivers Susan Rydberg, Sandra Traconis and Derek Sellers.

Kim's enormously successful writing and producing career - much of it with longtime writing partner Michael Baser - spanned from 1972 with Rod Serling's radio show, "The Zero Hour", to "Good Times", to "Three's Company", to "What's Happening Now", and to "Married... With Children", with many illustrious stops in between.

Kim was a joy to work with, but woe to those who dared mess with the written word capriciously. Kim was adamant about protecting a writer's work, and there are numerous execs whose foreheads still bear a puncture wound caused by one of Kim's well-sharpened and expertly hurled No. 2 pencils.

Kim was a wonderful judge of talent and incredibly generous with his assistance to those on their way up; there are countless writers, directors, and craftspeople working today who got their start under Kim's nurturing and watchful eye.

In recent years, Kim focused his energy on teaching and mentoring young writers coming up through the ranks. He also found great joy in collaborating on several projects with his good pal, Kathy Green.

But by far, his most spectacular collaboration was with his wife Jody, when they co-produced Kim's greatest joy, their daughter Kate. Kim has been Kate's proud father since Jody's first sonogram, and was thrilled when Kate decided to pursue a career in the arts.

In addition to Jody and Kate, Kim's passion and integrity will continue to be represented here on earth by his passionless and morally bankrupt brother Walt, sister-in-law Suzanne, his nephew Jason, and Jason's daughter, Addy.

Services were private. A Celebration of Kim's Life will be held at the Writers Guild Theater, on June 5th, 2009. Light refreshments will be served at 7:00 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 8:00. The theater is located at 135 S. Doheny Dr., Beverly Hills, CA 90211. Garage parking is complimentary.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Kim's name to the Writers Guild Foundation, 7000 W. Third St., Los Angeles, CA 90048, would be appreciated.

Kim, we're sure that you have great Dodger seats and already have the whole stadium smiling. And remember... if anyone mentions "Melba", deny it.

Peace.

My days on Three's Company were enriched by the good humor and very funny contributions Kim made to our show. It was so encouraging during each Wednesday writer's run-through to glance at Kim and see him laugh at our efforts. I was a mensch and a wonderful person to know.

I met Kim in the mid 60 s when I was 9 or 10. He was dating my sister at the time and even at such a young age I remember him as a sensitive, intelligent, honest and gifted with such a quick witty personality. I met him again at my father´s funeral in 2008. He was exactly as I remembered! I feel honored to have to know such a great man. He will be missed I´m sure by everyone who´s lives he touched.
My sincere condolences.

Kim came in to my store on the momentous day that Kate was born. He was so excited; he had to buy a special outfit for her. I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting a very special man that day, and many times after that. Jody and Kate, please accept heartfelt condolences from my husband, my children and me. Kim had a special place in our hearts.

I was the original writer with George Burditt on Three's Company and left the show a year before Kim's shift. We met sporadically on reunions and other occasions. One happy day we bumped into each other when he was in remission. We made a sacred vow to get together soon and often. In this town you have to give specific dates and times or else time runs out. Which of course it did. There's a lesson there. But I'd rather have Kim.

Games 2,6 and 7. The greatest baseball moments in our lifetime. Walt crushing the thunder sticks, several pairs. Kim pacing the entire stadium, all game. And US winning the World Series. Kim may ever-so slightly disagree. We still talked about the time he broke up a no-hitter against Greg Goossen in Little League, and apologizing to him while circling the bases. Great fun.

Kim was larger than life and a man comfortable in his own skin. I wish I'd known him better. What a courageous soul he had in the past 1 1/2 years. Wow. I will miss him with all my heart.

I met Kim and Jody in 1984 in DuQuoin, IL. I was very impressed by their "larger than life" personalities. We spent many Christmases together for the next 16 years (last time in 2000). I will never forget the transformation of these 2 friends when Kate was born. They went from a glamorous, partying couple to a "smoke free", "alcohol free" adoring parents of their baby girl and never looked back. Our Christmas times have never been the same without him. We will miss his generosity of self, his sense of humor, his love of family, and his fun loving spirit. Kim never met a stranger. May he meet Walt in the afterlife and listen to Roy Orbison's music again. May one day we all meet again and until then, we will miss you dearly. My prayers to Jody and Kate. We love you guys! I was a schoolmate of Kim's, at Grant High School, and was looking forward to seeing him again,at the 45th reunion in Oct. My thought and prayers are with him and his family. I always watched Married with Children, and when his name appeared, I said "I knew him when"

Kim was a fun guy to know and we go back over 30 yrs since he'd frequent the duplex behind my buddy John Keller's W. Hollywood place on account of his buddy (older bro) Danny Keller living in the back unit. By major coincidence, a college friend, Dave Braff, later wrote TV things with Kim so it came full circle for me in hearing about Kim a lot, besides twice being in the baseball fantasy league. I assume the roto league will come up a 'lot' at the Memorial as he was its co-Commissioner and guiding light. Some of the funniest e-mail exchanges in the history of cyber involved Kim in the crazy 2000 season where he and Braff put their whole miserable team up for 'firehouse' trading.

It was a privilege to know a live wire like Kim and I pray that God blesses all his family and friends now and forever.
