Leland Hammerschmitt Obituary
November 4, 1952 - November 27, 2010
Longtime Ojai resident, Leland Hammerschmitt, died unexpectedly at home in Ojai of natural causes on November 27, 2010.
Leland was born on November 4, 1952 in Los Angeles. He graduated from Loyola High School in Los Angeles in 1970 and from UCLA College of Fine Arts with a Bachelor of Arts major in Motion Picture and Television in 1975. Leland went on to receive a Master of Arts from Loyola Marymount University in 1981.
Leland moved to Ojai approximately 20 years ago and was an active member of the local Rotary Club and other community organizations. He was also a frequent letter writer to the Ojai Valley News and the Los Angeles Times.
Leland's career included producing concerts in the 1980s for groups including Three Dog Night and the Kinks, and artists such as Dolly Parton. He went on to produce videos and documentaries including "Running on the Sun," which chronicles the 1999 Badwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley and won a Libbey award for Best Theme of the Festival at the first Ojai Film Festival in 2000.
Leland is survived by his sister, Charlene Rasmussen, and brothers Charlie Hammerschmitt and L. Mark Hammerschmitt, and nephew Eric Mark Hammerschmitt and niece Kimberly Angele Serafini. Leland was preceded in death by his parents, Leo C. Hammerschmitt and Yvonne Hammerschmitt of Ojai.
Services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church located at 185 St. Thomas Drive, Ojai, CA 93023. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Rotary Club of Ojai Foundation, P.O. Box 511, Ojai, CA 93024.

LEE AND I SHARED A LOT GREAT PLAYTIME AS KIDS, I REMEMBER THE OLD PLAYHOUSE IN THE BACKYARD, AND CHARLIES SHIP MODELS IN HIS ROOM, WE PLAYED A LOT OF BASKETBALL TOGETHER IN OUR 20'S, HE WAS PRETTY GOOD FOR A 'LITTLE' GUY, GREAT DESIRE. I SPOKE TO LEE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 35YRS INVITING HIM TO OUR 40TH LOYOLA REUNION. TO BAD HE CHOSE NOT TO COME. GOD BLESS THE HAMMERSCHMITT'S.
