Lynne Deutsch Obituary

DEUTSCH, Lynne Karen, Ph.D.
Died April 2, 2004, in Acton, MA, Age 47. She accomplished so much during her brief life: An Astrophysicist, her specialty was Infrared Astronomy and Instrumentation. Lynne designed and built the next generation infrared camera for ground based telescopes. She participated in the final preparation of the IRAC/Spitzer space telescope launched into space last August. A faculty member of Boston University's Institute for Astro-physical Research and an associate of the Harvard Smithsonian Center For Astrophysics, she was both a role model and mentor for young women interested in a career in science. She was the organizer and guiding light for a Parent Advocacy Group at the Acton, MA school district, so that families could better understand and advocate for their special needs children. "She was feisty and funny, dedicated and determined. She was brilliant and beautiful." Lynne will be greatly missed, loved, and remembered forever by her husband, Douglas Sondak; her son, Reed Deutsch-Sondak; her sister, Judith Deutsch; and her parents, Ailsa and Victor Deutsch. Also, by the Acton community and her associates in science. Gifts, in her memory, may be marked for the "Lynne Deutsch Memorial Fund", and made payable to "Sally Ride Science Club", c/o Imaginary Lines, 9171 Towne Centre Dr., Suite 550, San Diego, CA 92122.

I've known Lynne since my last two years of high school. It is very difficult to put into words what she meant to me and what she still means to me. What I can say, however ineloquently, is that she will be sadly missed and a day doesn't go by that I do not reminisce upon how special she was and how difficult it will be without her.
