Sister Mary Joel Scully SHCJ Obituary

On Monday, September 9th, Sister Mary Joel Scully passed away peacefully at the age of 91.

She was born Marjorie Alice Scully to Francis and Verone Scully, in Portland, Oregon. She had a twin sister, Katherine. Both of them attended the Holy Child Academy, where they graduated from High School. Sister Mary Joel Scully attended the San Francisco College for Women.

In 1944, the family moved from Oregon to Pasadena, CA. In the same year, she entered the novitiate of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in Philadelphia. At her death, she had completed 69 years as a member of the Society.

She taught school at various locations including Philadelphia, Manhattan, Portland, OR, and for many years at Mayfield Junior School in Pasadena. She retired from Mayfield School in 1976. From 1976 to 2009, she tutored English as a Second Language to students at Pasadena City College (PCC) as a member of the Learning Assistance Center. She devoted tireless support to student success. She specialized in reading, speech, English as a Second Language (ESL), study skills, and classes for the purpose of developing an understanding of the curriculum and teaching techniques, and empathy for the students she tutored. She often worked with the most challenged students.

She was honored by the Board of Trustees of Pasadena City College at the Campus Special Recognition Awards which was a proud highlight of her life. She was an unsung hero of the PCC family.

She left a brother, Francis Scully, Jr., nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 16th at 6 p.m. at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in 2640 E. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107. A reception follows in the Church Hall.
