Maurie Beaumont Obituary

BEAUMONT, Maurie S. Long time South Laguna resident and businessman, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2008. He was 87. Very few people on this planet have had a better life than Maurie. He is survived by his wife Kamala, his younger brothers Bill, Jack, and Will; his son Eric and wife Eileen; his grandchildren Wendy Miller, Sarah Behr, Erica Borst, and Patrick Behr; as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family members of the Beaumont, Ross, Behr, and Connors families. He was preceded in death by his first wife Martha and daughter Linda Behr. He will be missed by his many longtime friends, some of whom he had known since grade school. Maurie was born May 21, 1920 in Winnipeg, Canada. The family moved to Los Angeles while he was still a young child. He was a graduate of Hamilton High School. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Force as a P-51 Crew Chief in England and Germany. He became a U.S. citizen during the war while stationed in England. After the war, Maurie's father, whom he loved and respected, helped him gain a foothold in the glass business. He learned the business from end to end, working as a journeyman glazer and regional sales manager. With this experience under his belt, he was asked to open Center Glass Company, No. 2 in Laguna Beach. Maurie treated both employees and clients with honesty and integrity; and because of this he did very well. It was about this time that he met Martha Behr of Seacliff Drive. Introduced by friends, they hit it off immediately and were married in 1964. They loved golfing, entertaining, traveling, cruising, and most of all, each other. The new Behr-Beaumont family consisting of Maurie, Martha, Linda and Eric lived in South Laguna in a great home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Camp Beaumont, as it was later known, was a warm and loving place, open to family and friends alike. Maurie loved being a host, a trait that runs strong in the Beaumont family. Maurie lost Martha, his loving partner of almost 40 years in 2001. While he missed her dearly, he was lucky enough to meet and become friends with the woman who would soon become his wife. Maurie met actress Kamala Devi through mutual friends in 2002. He and Kamala had a great many things in common, fell in love and married in 2005. While their time together was too brief, they spent it wisely. They cruised, they danced and they laughed, and they loved each other. Maurie and his brother Jack learned to love horse racing from their father. After years of watching horse racing, Maurie took it one step further and became an owner and breeder. From the early 1980's until his passing, he was an enthusiastic owner and patron of the ponies. Along with his passion for the horses, Maurie was an avid sports fan. He loved to watch the Dodgers and the Lakers especially, but if it involved a ball or a puck, he enjoyed watching it. In his earlier years Maurie played high school football, ran track, and in his 50's, was a standout softball pitcher for his company's slow pitch team. While Maurie was not a large man physically, he had the personality of a giant. He was friendly, kind, and helpful. He was able to shrug off the bad in life and enjoy the good. We would all be better off if we could learn this from him. He is greatly missed by all that know him. Friends and family are encouraged to join us for a celebration of his life at the Newport Beach Country Club on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. 1600 E. Coast Highway, Newport Beach, California. In lieu of flowers, it was his wish that donations be made to the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund. 310-550-4542

During several of our lengthy stays in Maui (our 'home away from home') we were delighted to meet and enjoy Maurie and Martha, thru our dear friend Dave Blake. Maurie, Dave, and my husband Bus, enjoyed many rounds of golf and camaraderie together, and the 5 of us had special times, laughs, fun, and loved chatting about our mutual love of horse racing and life in general at one of our favorite haunts: "Erik's Seafood Restaurant".
Maurie' s humor and chat were endless, would hold us spellbound, and charmed us all.
I like to think that Maurie has now joined my cherished husband Bus, and special friend Dave for endless rounds of golf...and dear Martha also - a most lovely lady.
Throwing a kiss to Maurie - bless him, he will be fondly remembered.

My sincere sympathy to Kamala, and each member of Maurie's family.
