Shirley Hui Obituary

Hui, Shirley Manchu
February 11, 1952 - October 6, 2010
Shirley Hui, age 58, lost her long and valiant battle with breast cancer shortly before midnight on Wednesday, October 6th 2010 at her home. Her final days were spent with her devoted husband by her side and surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren, siblings and friends. Her impact on the lives of those who knew her was evidenced in the pronounced outpouring of support she received throughout her 11.5 year ordeal.
She was born Shirley Manchu Tin on February 11, 1952, in Hong Kong, the youngest daughter of the late general Tin Sun Kiu. She was well loved not only by her parents, but also by her seven siblings. She moved to the United States in 1972 to pursue her education. While attending Pepperdine University, she met her soon-to-be husband, Ka-Kit, at UCLA and was converted to a diehard Bruin fan. The two became inseparable and in 1974 made the decision to marry and raise a family in Los Angeles, California. Ever the devoted wife and mother, Shirley selflessly supported her husband and children in their endeavors while forging a family unity and strength parallel to none. Her ardent support was pivotal in helping her husband realize his dream of developing a better health model through integrative East-West medicine. In turn, she herself was a beneficiary of this approach having survived more than eight years of metastatic disease.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Ka-Kit Hui, her children Edward, Ernest, Eugene and Elena, her five granddaughters Sarah, Samantha, Aurora, Kathleen and Karina, and her seven siblings.
A private service will be held for the family on Saturday, October 16 and a public memorial will be held on Sunday, October 17 at the Universal Chung Wah Funeral Home at 12:30pm in Alhambra, CA.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the UCLA Foundation for support of medical education in memory of Shirley Hui.

Dear Kit and Family,
I just learned of Shirley's passing from my son Brian, who is friends with one of your son's on facebook. My heart aches to know she fought so long
in her battle. I remember Shirley well, and when you lived across the street from me, I always heard laughter when you were playing games at night in your house with friends, always activity at the house and lots of laughter for all.
I know her passing is difficult for everyone who knew her but especially for the family. I wish there were more comforting words to say, I am so very sorry for your loss and hope that all the many happy memories will always be in your heart.
My deepest sympathy.

Dear Ka Kit and Family,

We send our deepest sympathies to you and your family. Shirley's smile always warmed a room. Her sweetness and gentleness is remembered as we were hanging out together in the 70's. We are reminded first time we met Shirley and saw instantly how much you two were in love.

In memory of your lovely wife, constant companion, and best friend,

Jan and Dennis Woo
