Stanton Price Obituary

Price, Stanton Joseph
July 9, 1939 - November 1, 2010
Stanton Joseph Price proudly claimed San Francisco as his birthplace. He grew up in Redwood City, CA and graduated from Sequoia High.
Stanton attended U.C. Berkeley and Harvard Law School where he developed his life long passion for social justice. After first working for the State of California and clerking for Judge Shirley Hufstedler, he went on to work for progressive organizations such as the Western Center on Law & Poverty, Venice Legal Aid, Housing & the Elderly, and NHLP. His passion was to fight for the underprivileged.
In 1965 he married the love of his life Sheila Steinberg. Their only child Abe Price was born in 1969. He followed his father into law.
In the 1980's Stan entered private practice and became known for his integrity and in-depth knowledge of business and health law. He also performed Pro Bono work for groups such as HALSA, Being Alive, Disability Rights California, T.H.E. Clinic, and The Center for Health Justice. He did not stop this work even after becoming virtually house bound. After a long valiant fight against serious illnesses, he died at age 71 on November 1, 2010 leaving his family and friends heartbroken.
Stanton also loved mystery novels, operas, and film. One could wish he had lived longer, but even despite illness, the years he lived were full and complete. He is survived by his loving wife, son, and brother.
Services will be held at Mt. Sinai Mortuary Hollywood Hills located at 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068 at 11 a.m. on Sunday November 7, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, his final request was that donations be sent to the Center for Health Justice. Donations can be sent to the Center for Health Justice, 900 Avila Street, Ste. 301, Los Angeles, CA 90012 or online at healthjustice.net

I served with Stan on the Los Angeles County Bar Association/Los Angeles County Medical Association Biomedical Ethics Committee for many years. His insight and humor made our meetings, including one just last month, a joy to attend. We will miss him greatly.

Thanks to Facebook – last June Stanton and I had a long and serious discussion about the superb qualities of Sheila’s chocolate cake. Only Stanton. He remembered details. He remembered important details – things that were important to others and not just to himself. He pointed out that we couldn’t go back to the glory days – but what friends of glory we made – we were all special. These days I sometimes wonder if our society has lost the moral quality exemplified by Stanton and so many of those who participated in the OCHPC. I don’t know the answer – I just know we all had something special… ‘in short there’s simply not – a more congenial spot’… May Stanton’s eternity be full of “happy ever afterings”.

Stanton Price was a man of integrity to the core. Words cannot express the deep hole he leaves in the hearts of those who loved him. What a gift he was (and is) to those whose lives he touched.

I remember when we were kids Stanton's mother would come
from San Francisco, bringing Stanton and his brother Franklin to stay with us at our house in the Fairfax district of L.A.

I loved those visits! Rest in peace, your loving cousin Eileen
