Billie & "Crissy" (Alex's bird)
Billie Kozloff
May 31, 2017
I was looking at an e-mail Alex sent to me Sept.12th, 2012 Nothing special, just a comment about a roofing project we had done on our garage. But I look at that date and I can't help thinking:
"Little did we know that he only had 11 months and 5 days more to live when he sent it to me."
None of us know how much time we have left on earth but we sometimes behave as if it's never going to end. Too often putting things off and saying...I'll do this or that,... "someday"
.
But Alex lived every single day of his life as if it were his last. Not a minute wasted doing nothing. Even his 10-20 minute "Power Naps" were only taken so that he could go longer and stronger before having to finally go to bed late into the night.
When he flew the "dream" airplane he built, he liked to time it so he could see 2 sunsets, one on the ground and another up in the sky. He never lost his wonder at the beauty of this world. He played hard but worked hard at his many engineering projects, often 12-18 hours a day and sometimes pulled all nighters. He loved it.
He shared his wonderful sense of humor with us all, every day and looked healthy, handsome, happy and strong. He always said he felt great but wished he had more energy. Amazing.
He achieved his dreams and I doubt he would have done anything differently during those last 11 months and 5 days even if he had known they were his last.
It still seems impossible that he's not here but he sure got the most out of his life...except... it could and should have been at least another 10 years longer. I thought he would set a new longevity record. He liked that idea. It was the only goal he couldn't make.
He was such a modest man. Never boasted or thought of himself as special.
But in the minds and hearts of all who will never forget him as long as we live....he was our "Hero". Someone we wished we'd had more time with and could be more like ...."someday".
With deepest love and admiration,
Mrs. Billie K. Kozloff

A note to Alex from his step-son:
Alex, I don't believe you ever knew how influential you were in my life. I will never forget riding on the catamaran with you, hanging on the trapeze, flying in the plane with you and taking the controls, or our late night racquetball sessions followed by the Simpsons. :-)
It is very hard for me to say goodbye without a tear, never mind tears going.. It was my true honor to know of as a step-son. And I want to thank you for giving my Mother happiness and joy to so many. You were truly a man with a great heart!
With much love and respect always!

Alex was a pleasure to see when he scheduled appointments with me. He was also an impish fellow, always stretching the boundaries of my recommendations, and good naturedly enduring my admonishments.
He was also an endless resource for recommendations to follow up on related to any number of interests expressed by people in the office. I already miss our banter. Carry on Alex!

Alex was the quintessential rennaisance man. I enjoyed sailing my Dart catamaran against him back in the late '70's and 80's until his retirement from sailing a few years ago. His love for life was truly something to marvel at. Love and prayers for Alex and his family.

We went to the ESA workshop this weekend and learned of Alex's death. What a wonderful man he was! Always so friendly and fun and one of the most interesting people we knew. Visiting him at his hangar at the Santa Paula Airport was such fun! We will miss him a lot and always remember him fondly. Our sympathies to his family.
