September 6, 1916 - August 7, 2014 Ending 97 wonderful, active and happy years, Jane passed away August 7, 2014 at home with loving husband, Don, and longtime Jane's caregiver, Evelyn beside her as always. Jane was born in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Elizabeth Biddle Oaks and James P. Cowles, She went to Corona School in Denver and later to Baldwin School in Philadelphia when her parents moved there. When the family moved to Santa Monica, Jane attended Lincoln grammar school, Santa Monica High School and then went on to UCLA where she became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and graduated with the Class of 1938. In June 1938 Jane and Don, as members of a wedding party, met.- a perfect match. Don was just starting law school, but Jane waited out the three years, and they were married June 14, 1941 in Beverly Hills, beginning a perfect 79 years of happy marriage. Jane and Don moved to Brentwood Park in 1954, where for 22 years, she and Don enjoyed many happy hours, met lifelong friends , and Jane led a very active life enjoying charitable activities including being a member of the Los Angeles Assistance League. Through the years Jane and Don found time to travel through Europe, enjoy several cruises and especially travel to Hawaii several times to see daughter Joanie, who had been transferred there. Becoming members of the Santa Monica Beach Club led to many new friends, lots of bridge (she was good) and enjoyed and took part in, the club activities. Later, golf entered her life when she and Don joined the Los Angeles Country Club became an avid golfer when she first broke 100. Lunch, bridge with a great group of friends and Sunday golf with Don and other couples playing in tournaments followed by golf became the norm in place of the Beach Club With the family grown and the house too large, Jane and Don moved to Beverly Hills and condo living, a new way of life. Jane and Don were early pioneers in the early days of condominiums. In addition to her loving husband, Don, Jane leaves her brother Ben Cowles (Joanie) of Phoenix, Ariz. Daughter Joan Dewar, son James Dewar (Karen) of Flagstaff, AZ, grandson Scott Dewar (Andrea) of Bakersfield, CA. Granddaughter Tracy Lawrence .Great great Granddaughters Megan and Madison, and Kami great great grandsons Michael and Mathew, nephew Owen Golden (Johnie) of Phoenix, AZ. Jane's brother, James Cowles predeceased her. The family is grateful and gives thanks for all the help until the end.
