Helga Malone Obituary

Malone, Helga Marie (Besvold)
Beloved mother of Alden and Floyd; grandmother to Wayne, Gregg, Laurie, Roger, Dana, Chris and Janet. Great-grandmother to Breanne, Matthew, Krista, Ryan, Zachary, Elke, Nils, Eric, Joseph, John and Jonathan. Helga passed away October 8th at the age of 106, living through 3 centuries. Born Helga Johnson, on a farm in Watson, Minnesota, life as she said was pretty primitive in 1905, at 7 years old, but she remembered fondly her father heating rocks in their stove to put under a blanket for warmth in the sleigh that took her to school. Helga married Lars Besvold in 1923, raised two sons and became involved in the Daughters of Norway and then Sons of Norway where she had recently received her lifetime pin for 50 years of service. She could always be found volunteering her cooking skills make Norwegian dishes like "Lefse," "Lutefisk" and her favorite, doughnuts. After Lars' death during World War II, Helga worked as a welders helper at the Kaiser Shipyard in Washington and then in 1946 moved to Glendale, where she spent the next 50 years. Helga joined the Salem Lutheran Church where she enjoyed working in the Ladies Auxiliary and other church activities. In 1950 Helga married Arthur Malone who passed away in 1955. While raising her sons; Helga made her career as a seamstress making clothes for her sons as well as creating and sewing clothes and costumes for some of the famous silent movie stars. Helga's greatest joy was "messing around" in her garden tending her flowers and many fruit trees and spending time with her family. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Salem Lutheran Church, 1211 North Brand Blvd., Glendale, on October 13 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in Helga's name to Salem Lutheran Church, of sons of Norway, Edvard Grieg #74 Lodge. Helga will be buried at Sunrise Cemetery in Duluth, Minnesota.
