Arens, Wade Hampton Gibbs|
October 10, 1951 - February 4, 2011
Wade Hampton Gibbs Arens, Jr., passed away Feb. 4 at 59 after a long battle with cancer.
Arens, born Oct. 10, 1951 in Monterey Park, CA, grew up in Hacienda Heights, CA, graduated from Los Altos H.S. and UC Irvine, with a BS in Experimental Psychology. As a young boy, he delivered newspapers and sold waterbeds. During his college years, he was a lifeguard in Newport Beach, worked a pool service route and sold Shakely. He excelled at water sports all his life, played water polo on an NCAA Championship team and was recognized as an All-American on the school's swimming and diving team. Arens also went on to coach swimmers and water polo players for the Mission Viejo H.S. Nadadores.
Starting as a pool builder and spa retailer in the early '70s, he then served as a regional sales rep for Pebble Tec in the early '90s. In 2002, Arens moved on to start AquaStar Pool Products, a leader and innovator of safe drains for pools and spas. He served as the company's technical coordinator, overseeing testing and product research, acting as liaison with government agencies such as the CPSC.
Friends and associates say his upbeat attitude, along with strength likely built in his days as an athlete, helped him face cancer, which he fought for approximately 10 years.
Wade and his wife loved to travel and he also enjoyed scuba diving, music, art, Sudoku, current events, food, shopping, spas, botany and movies. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife, Charlice; sons, Wade Jr. and Paul; daughter, Amy; two grandchildren with one on the way; his mother, Barbara Smith; three brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held on Sat., Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View Dr., Corona del Mar, CA with a Celebration of Life reception following: Oasis Sr. Center, 801 Narcissus Ave., Newport Beach, CA.
