Hollister, Robert West
59, passed away in his Culver City home on August 16, following a long illness.
Born in New York on July 12, 1952, Robert spent the majority of his life in southern California, graduating from Rolling Hills High School in 1970. He received his B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Fine Arts in 1976.
Robert was on staff at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), from 1990 to 2009, departing as Director of Collections and Registration. His work intersected with every aspect of MOCA's permanent collection, with all the programming during his tenure at the museum, as well as with art museums staffs, private collectors, dealers, shippers, and handlers throughout the country.
In addition to his museum work, Robert was an accomplished fine art photographer, leaving a large catalogue of work. Some of his images can be seen online at
Robert was the loving partner of Heather Dundas, devoted father of Colleen Hollister and James Hollister, proud father-in-law of Brittany Hollister, and beloved stepfather to Teo and Adena Rivera-Dundas. Robert is survived by his mother and stepfather Alma and David Hollister, three brothers, Roger Hollister, Gregory Hollister and David Hollister, Jr., several nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends.
A memorial service is planned for September 24. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Robert Hollister Memorial Fund at the Hammer Museum.
