Dolores Berry Obituary

Berry, Dolores Dawn August 17, 1930 - May 17, 2012 Resident of Palos Verdes Estates. Dawn Berry passed away at home on May 17, surrounded by her loving family after a short illness. All who knew Dawn will remember her as a spirited, fun-seeking woman who was full of life, loved her family and friends, and was a dedicated elementary school teacher for many years. Born in Torrance, Dolores Dawn Cobb, was raised in Hermosa Beach, attended St. James School in Redondo Beach, St. Mary's Academy in Los Angeles and graduated from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles. Dawn began her career teaching elementary school in Newport Beach. Most of her professional life, which spanned five decades, was devoted to teaching second grade and reading at Washington School in Redondo Beach. She attempted retirement in 1990, but then returned for several years of substitute teaching. Dawn lived for most of her life in the South Bay, but shared many adventures traveling with friends to destinations as varied as China, India, and Peru. She had many interests in common with her friends that included a love of art, calligraphy, history, theater, opera and movies. Dawn leaves behind her husband Frederic Berry, sons Charles (Julie) Berry of Campbell and John Berry of Los Angeles. Her four grandchildren, Nicholas, Samantha, Miles and Theo were the light of her life. She also leaves behind her brother Raymond (Trish) Cobb, and three nephews Brian, Daniel (Stacy) and David (Shannon) Cobb and their families, and her sister-in-law Barbara Berry. Dawn was loved by many and will be greatly missed, but will live on in our hearts and memories. In keeping with her wishes no services will be held. Her family is comforted in knowing that many of her friends will gather in their own way in her honor.

Dawn was so much fun to be around- very classy, but so down to earth at the same time- I think everyone considered her their friend. Rather than think of the loss to us all, we should all be glad we knew her when she was here. And if an angel should suddenly appear in your life- listen for that wonderful chuckle she had- because I'll bet it's Dawn!

I was privilaged to work with Dawn at Washington School for many, many years. She was a ray of sunshine, a witty friend, and beloved teacher. I will miss the candied walnuts she continued to bring us at Christmas, well after she retired. I don't think she ever really retired. She will be in my heart forever. All my love to her beloved family.
Sincerely,
Diane Williams

Our deepest sympathies, Fred, John and Charlie and all of the family. Dawn was so smart, witty and entertaining -- One could never be anything other than glad to be in her company. Turning the page is so difficult, but to know that she's in Heaven and has left lots of family and friends that loved her deeply is hopefully a comfort to you. She lived life as I could only hope to.
