Obituary Condolences

Shannon, Ruth Merrick
April 17, 1919 - October 6, 2012
Ruth Shannon died peacefully Saturday morning, October 6, surrounded by her family and beloved caretaker in her home in San Pedro at age 93. A teacher, voracious reader and literature lover, scholar, and homemaker, Ruth Merrick was born in Detroit, Michigan, and married her high school sweetheart Herb Shannon just before he left for World War II. Her first son John was born in 1943. Ruth and Herb moved to Los Angeles after the war. As her husband began working at the Long Beach Press-Telegram they had two more children, Michael and Peggy. Ruth began working as a teacher at what was then the Dahlquist Nursery School, a nationally recognized pioneer of child-centered learning. A lifelong lover of books and literature, Mrs. Shannon began going to nearby classes at night and afternoons. She eventually earned a bachelors and then a masters in English Literature. She became an active member of the San Pedro Friends of the Library and served for a time as its president. After her husband Herb died in 1997, she remained the center of a loving family, and the heart of a long-lived book club. She is survived by her son John and his wife Charlotte Riley, her son Michael and his wife Julie, and her daughter Peggy and Peggy's sons, Eric and Ian Skotnes, as well as her beloved caretaker for five years, Del Atillano.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in San Pedro, at 2 p.m. on November 2.
