Edgar Willson King
November 5, 1917 - December 24, 2012
Edgar was born in Tolley, North Dakota, the first of six children to Zerah King, an up-and-coming physician and his devoted wife Marguerite. At the age of four, Edgar and his family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he would remain, attending the University of Minnesota as a Business Major. While at college, Ed was also a den leader, pack master, camp counselor and canoe trail guide in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. He also found time for sports, excelling at football, baseball and ice hockey. He enlisted in the Marines in 1943, serving as a sergeant in the 5th Division stationed at Porter Ranch, Hawaii. A few years before, Edgar's sisters had set him up on a date with the soon to become love of his life, Anne Richter, who he would marry on January 5, 1944. After the War, Edgar, Anne and the first of six children, Susan, moved to Southern California. Ed developed a successful career in the finance and entertainment industries, holding positions from accountant to treasurer. Ed and Anne resided in Glendale for the past 54 years. During retirement, they traveled extensively, visiting friends and family. Edgar's lifelong passion was golf, and he enjoyed sharing this every chance he got with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Marguerite Carleton of Edina, Minnesota, and brother, Allen King of Succasunna, New Jersey. He was the greatest father in the world to Susan, Nancy, Betsy, Robert, Jon and Richard, loving grandfather to Michael, Jeffrey, Daniel, Brian, Craig, Kelly, Katie, Sam and Haley, and great-grandfather to Levi and Emma.
A celebration of Edgar's life will take place at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 12 at 11:00am. A memorial fund has been established at St. Mark's Episcopal Church to benefit projects close to Edgar's heart. Contributions may be made to: St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1020 N. Brand Boulevard, Glendale, California 91202, Re: Edgar Willson King Memorial Fund.
