Frederick Facey Obituary

Facey, Frederick Laird
May 16, 1931 - January 5, 2013
Beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, F. Laird Facey, M.D. passed away peacefully in his home on January 5, 2013. Laird was born in San Fernando, California and earned his BA degree from Occidental College, where he enjoyed being a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1957. He then served as a Resident in Surgery at the LA County-University of Southern California Medical Center, following which he was appointed to the Faculty of USC and the Staff of the Medical Center. He subsequently rose to the rank of Clinical Professor of Surgery at USC and Senior Attending Surgeon at the Medical Center. Dr. Facey had a successful 40-year career as a highly respected general surgeon in Inglewood, California. He was very dedicated to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital and served as both Chairman of Surgery and Chief of Staff during his tenure as a Physician and Surgeon. He held multiple board positions both at Daniel Freeman Hospital and with the National Carondelet Health System. He was a devoted member of the local Medical community and was highly regarded by all who knew him, including his physician colleagues, the nursing staff, and the administrative staff at the hospitals where he practiced. He will be remembered as an insightful and distinguished diagnostician who was very caring and loyal to his patients. Additionally, Laird served as President of both the Los Angeles Surgical Society and the Society of Graduate Surgeons of the LAC-USC Medical Center. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Laird cherished family above all and enjoyed traveling with his wife Mudge, who pre-deceased him in 2009. He was a great friend, mentor, confidant and trusted advisor to many. His quiet, confident, humble nature permeated every aspect of his life. He was a true gentleman and will be missed by many, especially his two daughters, Carol Watkins and Susan Caputo, their husbands, Stephen Watkins and Mark Caputo, his loving grandchildren, Madeline, Charlotte and Ellie Watkins and Matthew and Caitlyn Caputo, and his sister Jean May Rawlins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made payable to the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Please send c/o Michael Mayne at 1510 San Pablo Street, Suite 600, Los Angeles, CA 90033, in honor of the Class of 1957 Endowment Scholarship Fund in memory of Laird Facey. The family will be holding a private service.

I had the pleasure and honor of working with Laird at his surgical practice in Inglewood for 17 years. I can attest to the level of care he extended to his patients as well as the level of respect he had from his colleagues. I was treated with the utmost respect and generosity as well has having had the pleasure of knowing his wife Mudge, and their daughters as they grew from teenagers to married women with families. My memories are very fond and I'll cherish them forever. Rest in Peace Laird, God Bless your family.

Dick and I were so sorry to read of Laird's death. He was a great guy. We used to have a lot of fun sharing Laker tickets and going to SF for football games. Mudge sang at our wedding. Our thoughts are with you and your families.

I spent many of my early nursing days at the bedside with Dr. Facey. He was exactly what his obituary describes: quiet, confident, humble. The Daniel Freeman nursing community will never forget this wonderful physician and colleague.

So very sad to hear of Laird's passing! Although I have not seen him in several years, I will never forget the wonderful times, my husband, Al and I had with Mudge and Laird. So many laughs and good times. They were both WONDERFUL people!
My deepest sympathy goes to his family and beloved children. Rest in Peace, dear friend!
