Col. James W. O'Neil (USAF Retired), of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on June 7, 2013, at the age of 82. Raised in Southern California, Jim graduated from Excelsior High School in Norwalk, and went on to graduate from UCLA before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1952. Jim piloted an F105 jet for the Wild Weasel Squadron and did two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He was shot down over North Vietnam on September 29, 1972, and was held as a Prisoner of War until his release in March of 1973. He received a Purple Heart and Silver Star Citation, and continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement in 1980. Jim and his wife Nancy settled in Las Vegas, where he worked for another ten years as an employee of the Clark County Department of Emergency Services. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; his three children, Margaret, James Jr. and John, and six grandchildren; Christopher, Megan, Molly, Jack, Robert and Patrick.
Services will be held on Monday, June 17, 12:00 pm, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
