John Johnson Obituary

July 4, 1944 - April 13, 2014 John Johnson was editor and publisher of Change-Links, a monthly progressive newspaper for activists in Southern California. He produced it for over 30 years. The paper was a vehicle for his life-long passion in fighting for justice and change in our society. He loved the San Fernando Valley and lived most of his life in North Hollywood and Van Nuys. His parents John and Olympia and older brother, Eric predeceased him. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Stan Hoffman, his niece, Lauren, cousins in Idaho and Wyoming and many friends and followers. "That was the idea. That was the dream. It may all be over now, but once upon a time, it existed. No good idea ever truly dies. The dream was here, and so was I, and so were you." W.Pitt, 2006. Donations in John's memory can be sent to: Alliance for Global Justice, 225 E. 26th St. Ste 1, Tucson, AZ 85713.

Goodbye Johnny. We will miss you. I hope I did you justice with your memorial service that was so well attended. Your ashes will be buried in the mountains that you found on your peaceful drive only a few months ago. Love, Linda

So sorry I missed the service while on the Spirit Run to Manzanar with the Hiroshima Peace Flame, but I am sure John was with us in spirit, and I had him and his family, as well as other comrades who passed recently and untimely, in my thoughts along the way. John was a selfless and righteous contributor to the peoples' movement for justice and peace and his memory lives on in all those he touched.

Working in Support of Change-links

John Johnson - the editor for over 2 decades of the Los Angeles-based, progressive newspaper Change-links- passed away last month. This weekend the last of his possessions were removed from his former residence.

John had a collection of audio tapes (reel-to-reel and audio cassettes) of original recordings of folk music concerts, social change meetings, and other events from the 60s on. We hope Pacifica Radio Archives might have an interest in these.

John also had a collection of social change posters that we hope will be considered as donations by the Center for the Study of Political Graphics.

John was an artist, whose oil paintings have been collected and placed in storage. John's family hopes to find suitable homes for some or all of these paintings.

One idea was to try and create a memorial issue of Change-links highlighting John's life, his artwork mentioned above, and words of those remembering him.

All the computer equipment John used to produce Change-links is now in storage, including hard-drives containing 20 years of the newspaper's archives, many articles, graphics and emails, and the contact list for his 187 subscribers.

The historical information would be a goldmine for those studying work in support of peace and social justice issues over the 90's and into this century.

People from all walks of life were touched and motivated by John's selfless work putting out Change-links every month for almost a quarter of a century.

M hope is that the community of people supporting peace and positive reforms for society will gather to help in an an effort to find a new editor who can continue Change-links in one form or another with our continuing support. We hope that a meeting will be called in the near future to begin this effort.

John was a remarkable human being, and I miss him very much. My hope is that those who benefited from Change-links will come together to keep it alive in one form or another. Greg Foisie

Thank you to everyone who attended my brother's memorial service. He would have been so happy seeing all his friends there.
