Theresa Tyor Obituary

April 10, 1927 - September 21, 2014 Born in NYC to Bennett Tyor & Rose (Siegel) Tyor. She attended the High School of Music and Art and Queens College, receiving a Master's degree in early education from Yale. In 1948 she married Joseph K. Indenbaum and relocated to Los Angeles in July of 1952, just in time for a major earthquake. She was the developer and director of the Culver City Children's Center from 1973 until her retirement in 1990 when she began spending her summers in Vermont. Her effectiveness with staff, students and parents created an atmosphere of trust and belonging, so that the children and staff learned, parents felt blessed, and staff members were inspired to seek further training. From 1992 until 2008 she was a member of the Docent Council of LACMA. She developed a love for the art of Southeast Asia and became a member the Southeast Asian Art Council division of the Docent Council. Like her mother before her, she was an enthusiastic world traveler, visiting numerous countries on 5 continents. She was predeceased by her two half-brothers, Milton and Herman Tyor and her long-time companion, Leon Thamer. She leaves her children, Richard Indenbaum, and Laurie Indenbaum and her partner Andrew Toepfer, and her beloved grandchildren: Samuel Indenbaum and Rosa A. Indenbaum, who knew her as "Grandma Fish." Also surviving are nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins and many friends. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made in her name to the L.A. Foodbank or to NARAL Pro-Choice America. Memorial celebrations will be held in Los Angeles and in Vermont at a future date.

Five years have passed without her, and I still miss Terry every day. I could (and did) tell her anything. Whenever I hear from Laurie or Rick, I like to think that she would be so proud of her children and grandchildren, who are such wonderful human beings.

Terry, a loyal beloved friend, quiet but fierce and steady champion for children and families, teacher, adventurer and master of music and the arts. Your friendship and humor are missed and I will always remember our times together in friendship and work to improve children's lives. Missing you. Nancy Klein

As a long time member of the "Senior Circle" at Main Street Arts, Terry's arrival for the summer was always eagerly anticipated by the group and her departure in the fall left an empty place. She made her mark in our little village, and from the obituary it is pretty clear that she affected many more lives. She was an intelligent and gentle soul and I am so glad to have known her. My sympathy goes out to you all. Love, Mary

Terry was, for me, the role model in her generation of our family, the independent woman who made her life what she wanted it to be and lived it on her own terms while remaining lovingly connected with her family. She was supportive but didn't suffer fools gladly. I will truly miss her.

Terry was a very special woman, loving, nonjudgmental, always with a smile and a good ear for music and for listening. She made our world brighter and her light will be missed.
