Antonia Lance Obituary

May 6, 1919 - January 19, 2016 Antonia Churchill Lance, age 96, died peacefully on January 19th, at her residence at Sunflower Gardens, Santa Ana, CA. Toni, as she was known, was a member of a long established California family and granddaughter to Owen Humphreys Churchill. Toni graduated form Malrborough School in 1937 and was then a Kappa Alpha Theta at UCLA, graduating in 1942. After college she spent three years as secretary of the Department of Athletics at UCLA, working for William Ackerman. Toni competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin on the US Sailing Team. In the eight meter event, she sailed on the Angeltia as a member of the American team, lead by her father, 1932 gold medalist, Owen Churchill. In 1946 Toni married Douglas Lance who predeceased her in 1986. She loved traveling, dancing, sports, gardening and most of all her four girls. Toni will be remembered for her tenacious and independent spirit. She is survived by her sister Patricia Wink of Detroit, MI, and her four daughters: Cynthia Lance-Jones of Pittsburgh, PA, Wendy Albade of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Pamela Emery of Newport Beach, CA, and Toni Lance of St. Croix, VI. Toni also had four grandchildren, Lance Emery, Douglas Jones, Chase Emery and Emily Jones. The great grandchildren enjoyed time with her Hudson Emery, Tess Emery, Mason Emery, Miles Emery and Ford Emery.
