Obituary Condolences

Died peacefully at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica on August 15,2007 at the age of 92. Beloved husband of Natalie and devoted father of Dr. Mark and the late David. Loving father-in-law of Melissa. Born on April 7, 1915 in Holzminden, Germany, the son of Lifscha and Mordecai Zatzkis. He was a Holocaust survivor who narrowly escaped from Germany in 1939. He lived in London for a year before emigrating to New York in 1940. He received degrees from Ohio State University and Indiana University. He then taught at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill before receiving a PH. D. in Physics from Syracuse University in 1950. On July 1, 1951 he married Natalie Serlin in Syracuse. Subsequently he taught mathematics at the University of Connecticut before joining the mathematics faculty at New Jersey Institute of Technology. There he was the Chairman of the Mathematics Department for 32 years before retiring in 1985.
In 2000 he and his wife moved to Los Angeles where they have been residing for the past seven years. In addition to his wife and son Henry leaves three grandchildren whom he loved very much: Elliot, Hayley and Gregory Zatzkis . He is survived by his sister Rosel Goldbaum of San Diego. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all of his family.
Graveside services will be conducted Sunday 3:00 p.m. August 19 at Hillside Memorial Park, (800)576-1994.
