BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. — Thena Ophelia Phillips Owens, 80, died on April 4, 2014 at her home.

Born on June 29, 1933 in Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Coy Lee and Annie Skipper Phillips.

She was the epitome of a devoted homemaker for her husband and children. Her commitment extended from her home to her church and community. For 60 years Thena was involved in many difference facets of her church's work: serving as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School director, church clerk, and as a choir member. Although dedicated to these tasks, Thena's real passion in service for her Lord was missions. Her involvement in Woman's Missionary Union was tireless. She served in various capacities and held the director's position for many years. Her passion extended beyond her home church to serve on the Pee Dee Baptist Associational WMU Council.

Thena became involved in her community as a young wife; she participated in the efforts of the Brightsville Community Development Association where she served as Secretary/Treasurer. She was also an active member of the Woodmen of the World Fraternal Organization and the Brightsville VFD Ladies Auxiliary.

Her personal interests were simple. She enjoyed treasure hunting for unique china pieces and working on word puzzles. Her greatest joys came from her church work and spending time with her husband and family.
