LAURINBURG — Mr. James Levi Alford, 85, passed to his heavenly home on Dec. 31, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Park with military honors. Dr. Thomas Marshall and the Rev. Duane Blease will officiate the services.

James was born on April 28, 1928 in Robeson County, a son of the late Daniel Levi Alford and Flodia Hardee Alford. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War. He was a former shipping manager with Fieldcrest Service Center in Laurinburg. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Mr. Alford was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed following his favorite teams: the Atlanta Braves, North Carolina Tar Heels, and the Washington Redskins. He also enjoyed playing softball, fishing, and traveling to the beach. Mr. Alford also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years Mrs. Sue Ethlyn Beane Alford, sister Edith A. Wischhusen, and son-in-law Richard Butler.

Mr. Alford is survived by his daughters JoAnne Hogan (Bobby) of Rock Hill, S.C., Susan Butler of Laurinburg, and Sandra Collins (Darryl) of Charlotte, son William "Bill" Brown of Surfside Beach, S.C., sister Ethel A. Boozer of Summerfield, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will be from 12:30-2 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at Richard Boles Funeral Service.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to New Hope Baptist Church 11480 Hasty Road Laurinburg, NC 28352.
