LAURINBURG — Dr. Roger Burns Gaskins, PhD, age 81 of Scotia Village in Laurinburg passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Roger was born Dec. 31, 1932 in Bridgeport, Alabama, son to the late Herbert Burns Gaskins and Peggy Jean Rogers Gaskins. He was a Veteran of the Korean War that proudly served with the United States Air Force. He loved his career with NASA at the Kennedy Space Center as an Aerospace Technology Project Manager. He was awarded the Exceptional Service Medal and retired from NASA in 1983 after more than 36 years of dedicated service.

He was a resident of Scotia Village and served as a member of the First Baptist Church in Laurinburg. He was a collector of coins and stamps and especially enjoyed traveling. Roger was kind, compassionate, a devoted father, grandfather and friend that will truly be missed.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Jean Peterson.

Surviving are his sons, Roger B. Gaskins, Jr. and wife Suzanne of Plano, Texas, Jerry Gaskins and wife Trean of Tallahassee, Fla., Douglas Gaskins of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren and many special friends including Joyce Howell of Laurinburg.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is being planned for 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Scotia Village.
