CHARLOTTE — Albert Stevenson Mitchener, age 58, of Charlotte, was born in Laurinburg on July 14, 1956, the son of Sara Carton Mitchener of Laurinburg and the late Dr. James Samuel Mitchener.

A graduate of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, Steve went on to study at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. He then studied architecture and urban planning at Clemson University before enrolling at the University of South Carolina where he earned a Master of Science degree with an emphasis in real estate in 1987.

On May 14, 1988, Steve married Sarah (Sally) Pate Hardison of Wadesboro. Later that year, they relocated to Charlotte where they have spent many happy years with wonderful friends and family, raising their two boys, Jay and McNair, and enjoying every aspect of life.

Steve enjoyed a long career in both the commercial real estate and the commercial building businesses, primarily in Charlotte. For 15 years, he worked for Lat Purser & Associates. Steve loved helping companies find and launch new business locations, and he was known for his care and attention to every detail, in areas beyond the traditional services provided by a real estate professional.

Steve's first love was his family. He was a loving and caring husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. A selfless man, he always found time for special moments with loved ones. He also enjoyed working with youth as a Sunday school teacher and Boy Scout leader at Christ Church.

An avid gardener, Steve loved his yard and garden and especially enjoyed learning about the history and development of ornamental plants. Steve also loved golf, reading, exercising, travel and his many happy vacations with family at the beach.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sarah (Sally) Hardison Mitchener; their two sons James (Jay) Stevenson Mitchener and McNair Hardison Mitchener; his mother Sara Carton Mitchener; his six siblings, Dr. James Samuel Mitchener and his son, Jim; Victor Carton Mitchener, and his wife, Becky, and their children, Roland Simmons and her husband, Michael, Anne Stuart Mitchener, John Moore, Katie Moore, and William Moore and his wife Maddie; William Thomas Mitchener and his wife, Vicky, and their children, Ruffin, Larson, and Mary Carton; Elizabeth Mitchener Daniel, and her sons, Robert and David; Dr. John Edward Mitchener, and his wife, Julia, and their children, Sanders and Margaret; and Harriet Mitchener Gray, and her husband, Lee, and their children, Will and Mitch.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Samuel Mitchener Jr. and brother, Paul Williams Mitchener.

A memorial service to celebrate Steve's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
