Asier Simmons (1928 - 2016)

LUMBERTON — Asier Simmons, 88, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at his home. He was born in Columbus County on January 8, 1928 to the late Marion Bruce and Delphia Ella Simmons.

He graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1945 of Williams Township High School and went on to serve in the US Air Force. After his service in the Air Force, he worked for the State of NC as an engineer technician, retiring after 39 years. He will be remembered for his dedication to his church, Godwin Heights Baptist Church, and his devotion as a member of the Masonic Lodge of Lumberton for over 50 years. He liked to stay active. His favorite activities included bowling, horseshoes, and participating in the local Senior Olympics.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy Dale Andrews Simmons; one brother, John Simmons; and two sisters: Gladys Sessoms and Estelle Simmons.

He is survived by two sons: Edward B. Simmons and wife Sharon of Wilmington and Terry Simmons and wife Kathy of Lake Waccamaw; three daughters: Sandra S. Wilkins and husband Larry of Wilmington, Cynthia S. Hayes and husband Tony of Lumberton, and Pamela S. Mercer and husband Jeff of Laurinburg; two brothers: Wade Simmons of Clarendon and Bruce Simmons of Loris, SC; one sister, Clara Carroll of Lumberton; nine grandchildren: Rebecca Lamb, Sarah Hayes, Whitney Wilkins, Katie Walker, Caleb Mercer, Tanner Mercer, Marlee Mercer, Matthew Simmons, and Lindsay Felton; and six great-grandchildren.

A time of visitation will take place on Friday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at Godwin Heights Baptist Church with Rev. David Hawes officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
