LAURINBURG — Charles David Smith, 84, of Laurinburg, died on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

Charles David Smith was born December 23, 1932 in Montgomery County to Virginia Allen Smith and Joseph Jones Smith. He served in the U.S. Air Force prior to marrying his devoted wife, Virginia, and making their home in Laurel Hill. Charles retired as senior partner of Gustaf C. Lundin & Company after 51 years of service as a Certified Public Accountant. Active in his community, Charles was on the Board of Directors of Boys and Girls Home of NC, Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Department, South Eastern Radio Reader Service, Scotia Village, NC Association of CPAs, Scotland County Community Foundation, Paul Harris Fellow of the Laurinburg Rotary Club, and served as a director of Pee Dee Electric for 27 years.

A dedicated member of the Laurel Hill United Methodist Church he has served as Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee. After joining Laurel Hill Lions Club in 1962, Mr. Smith devoted much time and effort to promoting the organization's many services and programs. He proudly served as chairman of White Cane, Eye and Human Tissue Bank, Blind and Sight Service, Budget and Finance, Camp Dogwood, and as District 31-F governor in 1984-85.

Charles is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Dare Carter Smith, and two daughters: Charla Smith Pridgen (Brian) of Lewisville; and Wendy Smith Peele (Wayne) of Laurinburg. He leaves behind four granddaughters: Marta Bierbaum, Abigail Jennings (Cameron), Courtney Nason (Jordan), and Meredith Bryan (Garrett), and three great-granddaughters.

Preceded in death by his brother Jerry, Charles is survived by brother Nelson Smith of Mt. Gilead; and sister Sue Montague Kaynor (Robert) of Durham; and many loving nieces, nephews, and other family. Charles was a devoted husband and father.

Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium, East Church Street in Laurinburg.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church on Cameron Street in Laurel Hill. Private burial to follow at Carter Cemetery.
