LAURINBURG — Christine "Chris" Gibson, 89, passed away on Dec. 10, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.

She is survived by her sister Murl Newton of Plymouth, her companion and caregiver Meriam Coffman, special friend Betty Thomas, her nieces Tommi Badger of Charlotte, Ginger McQueen of Mt. Olive, and Christy Ginn (Jimmy) of Plymouth, her nephews Dwight West of Burlington, Alan West of Erwin, and Edward McQueen (Mariann) of Bath, and several great nieces and nephews.

Born on April 3, 1925, she was a daughter of the late J. Chris and Virginia Odom Gibson and sister of the late Edna and Emma Lee Gibson West. Chris served as a fourth and fifth grade teacher in Kinston, the Canal Zone, and spent many years at Central and Covington Street Schools in Laurinburg. She was an innovative teacher, earning the love and trust of her students and involving them in considerable "hands-on" instruction. She retired after teaching for 41 years.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church.
