LAURINBURG — Clarence Wingate Coughenour, 90, passed away on Nov. 17, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years Gloria Howell Coughenour, his sons Jim Coughenour (Carol) of Laurinburg, Jake Coughenour (Patsy) of Gibson, Mike Coughenour (Carol) and Mark Coughenour (Pam) of Laurinburg, his grandchildren Meg Scott, Leigh Bagley, Stewart Coughenour, Cory Coughenour, Thomas Coughenour, and Leslie Coughenour, and seven great-grandchildren.

Born on Aug. 16, 1925 in Mecklenberg County, he was one of nine children of the late Dr. Thomas A. and Ethel Hammond Coughenour. He moved to Laurinburg in the 1930s and at the age of 17 he left to serve in the shipyards of Brunswick, Georgia. As World War II accelerated, he joined the Merchant Marines when twice as many American ships were being sunk by U-boats as were being built. He made 11 crossings of the Atlantic in a service where one in 26 perished. He was later transferred to the Pacific.

In 1947 he and his wife Gloria opened Laurinburg Upholstery on South Main Street — in the front was their grocery store and the upholstery shop was in the back — and it was a business that later grew into current day Coughenour Furniture.

Clarence was not only skilled in upholstery, but also loved to tinker and rebuild antique automobiles: Maxwells and Model T Fords.

A noted local historian, Clarence held a sharp memory of his years in World War II and earlier years in Laurinburg. He was blessed with an engaging personality and an ability to detect the intricate details in a conversation.

Memorials in memory of Clarence are requested for Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, 600 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28353 or Scotland Regional Hospice, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.
