CHARLOTTE — Claude William Sanford Jr., of Charlotte, died April 13, 2015 after a brief battle with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).

Claude was born in Laurinburg on July 3, 1938. He received his bachelor's in Engineering from NC State College (NCSU) in 1961 and married Louise Blackwelder in 1962.

He started his professional career with the railroad, working in the Engineering section with land development, surveys and track work for five years before beginning a new job with Crowder Construction Company in Charlotte. In 1972 he left Crowder to join McCulloch England Associates Architects where he stayed until retirement. Early in his career, he became a registered land surveyor and a Professional Engineer. By the time of his retirement he was Senior Vice-President in charge of Construction Administration.

He was a longtime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served as Elder, Clerk of Session and chair of many committees. Most recently he served as Chair of the Building and Grounds committee.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Louise, two children Cathie Ghorbani and Frances Platock and son-in-law Eric, grandchildren Cyrus and Lily Ghorbani and sisters Ann McQueen and Claudette and William McIntyre.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Presbyterian Church 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, 28211. A reception will follow.

Because of Claude's passion for the work of the Building and Grounds Committee and to honor his dream of creating a Major Maintenance Fund, in lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
