LAURINBURG — Daniel Stuart Royals, 70, passed away March 15, 2017 in his home in Laurinburg.

Born on April 2, 1946 in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Marc and Louise Royals and beloved husband of Shirley Burdell Royals.

A lifelong student and entrepreneur, Dan earned a Master's Degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He also studied at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, and John A. Logan College, where he was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.

A strong psychology and counseling advocate, Dan devoted his life to helping others. He was appointed Regional Chairman for the Illinois Association of Mental Health for Southern Illinois and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He served as a court-appointed Guardian Ad Litem for children in foster care, volunteered and served on the board for United Way, and took part in many activities benefiting the mentally and physically handicapped. Most recently, Dan served as a Certified Mediator for the North Carolina Administrative Office and as a Superior Court Mediator and Certified Human Research Data Collector for the Dispute Resolution Commission. He is the founder of Royals & Associates, an office supply distributorship and marketing firm. Dan also provided professional photography with an emphasis on pictorial directories, family portraits and environmental settings.

Dan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and life-term member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9030.He served as president of the Council for numerous years and held other offices throughout his active membership. He also served as past chairman for the Operation LAMB project, coordinating the volunteers and Scotland County Schools to benefit citizens with intellectual disabilities.

Dan was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. He adored Shirley, his best friend and devoted wife of 31 years.Dan enjoyed spending time with his beloved labrador retrievers, photography, woodworking, reading western novels, watching John Wayne movies, traveling, and making people laugh.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Daniel Royals, Jr.; grandchildren Cheska, Hannah, Mason and Christian; brothers Paul (Susan) and David Royals; sister Deborah Royals (John) Gabby; and several nieces and nephews. Hewas preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Royals Zohar, and brothers Marc and Joseph Royals.

Dan's family would like to thank their friends for their expressions of love and support, Scotland Regional Hospice for their committed care, and Richard Boles Funeral Service for their professional attention and personal concern.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
