LAURINBURG — Dorothy Beasley McMillan was born on July 15, 1925 and 92 years later, died on her birthday — July 15, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late Zebulon and Helen Peel Beasley.

Her real life began when she and her beloved Ernest were married. She was only 15 and he was 20 years her senior and their love for each other was limitless. Ernest died at the age of 89 and Dorothy honored him by living in his birthplace for the rest of her life.

Dorothy loved "the home place" and the security and comfort it provided to her. She loved the bountiful vegetable gardens grown on the place each year, the grapevines and pecan trees, the blueberry and fig bushes, the beautiful pines and cultivated crops and the occasional animals that stopped by for a while.

Doggedly determined, Dorothy lived her life exactly as she wanted: proud, independent and frugal-claiming the latter kept her "close to God."

While she was able, she enjoyed her church, particularly the annual ingathering in the fall where she so proudly helped serve coffee.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Isabel and Allen McMillen; two grandchildren, Kristin and Rob and their spouses, Peter Koltun and Kerri McMillen; four beautifully perfect great-grandchildren, Sailor and Reed Koltun and Ella and Ava McMillen; and many other cousins both in the Beasley and McMillan families.

We are so appreciative to those family members, neighbors and friends who helped her when she needed it. Your kindness was not unnoticed. To know that you were nearby was a true comfort to us. We also remember with great fondness her caregiver and friend Patty Weatherford who she just adored.

We humbly give thanks to the staff and physicians of Scotland Health Care Center Emergency Department and ICU unit, to Scottish Pines in Laurinburg, NC for their compassion both to "mama" and her family and we are grateful to Scotland Hospice for their kindness and compassion during a sad and difficult time. Mama will be missed. She surely was loved.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, July 20 at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Howard H. Whitehurst. Interment for immediate family will be at the McNeill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in honor of Dorothy and Ernest McMillan to the Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, 15301 McFarland Road, Laurinburg, NC 28352 would be appreciated.
