LAURINBURG — Frances Watkins McCall, 89, passed away on Sept. 28, 2014 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg. She spent the past 11 years at Scotia Village retirement home, where she was in good health until this past year.

Born July 26, 1925 in Mount Gilead, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William Eugene Watkins, III and Callie Allen Watkins, and was the wife of the late Eugene C. McCall, Jr. Raised in Troy, North Carolina, she was the second child of four siblings.

Frances graduated from Troy High School in 1942 and graduated in 1946 from Meredith College in Raleigh with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, she moved to Laurinburg, where she lived in the Teacherage, a residential dormitory provided by the Scotland County School System. She began teaching second grade.

She married Eugene Calton McCall, Jr. in 1949. She moved into the McCall dairy farm home, constructed in 1911. She left work to begin her role as homemaker and mother. After her youngest child began middle school, she returned to teaching. She taught kindergarten for many years at the Church in the Pines Presbyterian Church, in Laurel Hill, a job she thoroughly enjoyed.

Frances was a loving mother, wife, and teacher. She will be remembered by the many children she taught, and by others, for her grace, kindness, friendship, compassion and faith. She was a longtime member of Snead's Grove United Methodist Church in Laurel Hill. She moved to Scotia Village Retirement Community in Laurinburg in 2003. She enjoyed connecting with old friends and making new friends. For many years there, she played piano, led singing and read for many Scotia residents.

She is survived by her sister Mary Watkins Chappell, of Allendale, South Carolina; her daughter Jane McCall Williamson (Tom) of Charlotte; her son Eugene Calton McCall, III (Lucy) of Greenville, South Carolina; her son Robert Andrew McCall (Emily) of Marshville; and six grandchildren, Sarah Campbell McCall of Columbia, South Carolina; Rachel McCall Olson (Marcus) of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Andrew Calton McCall (Ryann) of Raleigh; Rebecca Jane McCall of Marshville; Katherine McCall Williamson of Charlotte; and Celia Rose McCall of Marshville.
