LAURINBURG — Herald Hall Hughes Jr., of Laurinburg, died July 2, 2015 at Scotia Village. He was 87 years old.

Herald was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on March 23, 1928 to the late Herald Hall Hughes and Kathleen Compere Hughes. He was the older of two children.

Herald spent 40 years as a successful actuary. His career included time with Jefferson Pilot, and then as a vice president with National Standard Life Insurance and Mutual of Detroit.

Herald was a devoted husband and a proud and strong father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Josephine Brooks Hughes; by his children, and grandchildren — Herald H Hughes, III "Bear" (wife, Becca and children Rachel and Walt); Kathleen Hughes Kilbourne (husband, Ed; children Brooke Saunders Harris (BJ), Jenny Kilbourne, Amanda Kilbourne Richardson (Jack); Marijo Hughes Swanson (husband, Steve; children Justin and Ryan) and Heather Ann Hughes. Herald is also survived by his great-grandchildren, who he was blessed to have known and loved — Bradley Harris, Allison Reese and Ethan Reece.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Morris Morgan Entertainment Center at Scotia Village. Visitation with the family will immediately follow the service. Arrangements are being handled by McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
