PINEHURST — Kathryn Elise "Kate" Ulrich, 32, of Pinehurst, passed away Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 at the FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst after a four year battle with brain cancer.

Born on Aug. 9, 1984 in Laurinburg. Kate was 2002 graduate of Scotland County High School and in 2006 graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. with degrees in Philosophy and Religion. Like many young girls, Kate fell in love with horses and participated in the Junior Riding Program that was an arm of St. Andrew's College (then) equestrian team, where she excelled in the hunter – jumper category.

In high school, Kate played on the soccer, tennis and golf teams, twice competing in the State 4A Championship. In Kate's senior year at Presbyterian College she became a founding member of the Women's Golf Team.

Kate worked for Estee' Lauder in Greenville, S.C., for the Pilot newspaper in Southern Pines and for various golf course operations in the Pinehurst area. She was also a talented artist and photographer, painting original works and assembling a portfolio of extraordinary nature photos.

As her disease progressed, Kate endeavored to "pay it forward" by lending her name and story to aid the fundraising efforts of the National Brain Tumor Society, whose goal is to fund research to find effective treatments for brain cancer. "Team Kate" was the top fundraiser for a recent local event held in Pinehurst, and has raised over $12,000 in the past several months.

Kate is survived by her parents, James and Susan Ulrich of Pinehurst, brother Jack of Phoenix and her loyal sidekicks Stella and Gonzo.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Boles Funeral Home, 35 Parker Lane in Pinehurst. A service to the Witness of the Resurrection will be held Monday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Brownsen Memorial Presbyterian Church, S. May St. Southern Pines.
