SOUTHERN PINES — Nancy McEachern Neal, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, died on July 13, 2014 at her daughter's home in Southern Pines. Nancy was born July 4, 1929 in Raleigh to John Scarborough McEachern and Phyllis Albright McEachern. She attended St. Mary's School in Raleigh, and in 1946 she married John William Neal IV of Raleigh.
Above all else, Nancy loved her family, her church, and her commitment to civic causes. She was active in numerous organizations, including the PTA, Democratic Party, Boy Scouts, Arts Council, and several involving women's issues. She was a participant at numerous Democratic National Conventions and attended the World Conference on Women in China. She was a Founding Mother of Womenfolk. She sang in the Moore County Choral Society and faithfully served as a board member of the Richmond County Arts Council. Close to her heart was her sisterhood in The Daughters of the King.
There was only one Nancy Neal. You could always count on her to volunteer to attend a meeting or a performance or to serve on a board, to work hard for women, to support her church, and to be late everywhere she went. She was a unique woman who will be missed by family and friends throughout the country.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and an infant daughter, Amy Olivia Neal. She is survived by her brother, John Scarborough McEachern of Southern Pines, and her eight children, John W. Neal (Lynn), Paul G. Neal (Becky), Kemp A. Neal (Donna), and Ninna Neal DelGuercio, all of Southern Pines, and Christopher H. Neal of Gibson, Frazier Neal (Kurt Baum) of Charleston, S.C., Robert Neal of Hamlet, and Philip Neal of Indian Trail. In addition, she is survived by fifteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
A memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 19 at 1 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hamlet. The family requests memorials be sent to All Saints Episcopal Church, 217 Henderson Street, Hamlet, N.C. 28345.
