Nellie Chavis Barnes

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. — Mrs. Nellie Chavis Barnes, 64, passed away on Nov. 3, 2014 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Burroughs-Cooper-Kiser Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 4-5 p.m. just prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Born on Sept. 21, 1950 in Laurinburg, she was the daughter of Leroy Chavis and the late Victoria Chavis. Mrs. Barnes graduated from the University of South Carolina with a master's degree in education, and was a teacher at McColl Middle School. She enjoyed teaching and loved her students. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Bennettsville First Church of the Nazarene, a member of the Scottish Pilot Club in Laurinburg, and a member of the Scotch Meadows Country Club, where she enjoyed playing golf. She also enjoyed fishing.

She is survived by her father Leroy Chavis of Bennettsville, her husband Fletcher Barnes of the home, daughter Allyson Alberto and husband Herbert of North Charleston, S.C., brother Roy Earl "Pete" Chavis of Bennettsville, and sisters Dianne Pergerson and husband Larry of South Port and Barbara Angus of Bennettsville.
