WAGRAM — Samuel G. Evans, 91, passed away at his home on Oct. 16, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at Spring Hill Baptist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the service. Shortly after the service, Sam will be committed at Lancaster Memorial Park, Lancaster, S.C.

Sam was born in Lancaster, S.C. on May 14, 1923 to Vida and Ed R. Evans. His parents, brothers Clyde and Edward, and sister Juanita preceded him in death.

Sam was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 65 years Sarah Bailey Evans, daughter Sarah Paulette (Tommy Mullen) of Wake Forest, daughter Janice Wilkinson (Mike Wilkinson) of Madison, and two grandchildren: Kyle Wilkinson of Madison and Aaron Wilkinson (Chasity) of Stoneville. His precious great-grandchildren Autumn Leigh, Dailei-Anne and Tucker brought much joy to him. Also left to cherish his memories are Ethel B. Blackmon, Don, Melanie, and Ben Fisher.

Sam was a World War II United States Army veteran who served in the 328th Air Service Squadron. He was an active member of the men's Sunday School class at Spring Hill Baptist Church until his health declined. He was honored by being named Deacon Emeritus. The couple joined the church soon after moving to Wagram in 1965 from Lancaster, S.C.

Springs Mills, Inc. employed him to work at the newly constructed textile mill near Wagram in the adjoining power plant. They enjoyed many years of becoming a part of the small town. Sam was a member of the American Legion Post and Wagram Men's Club. He was a charter member of the Golden K's of Laurinburg. He retired after 20 years from J.P. Stevens. After retirement he loved playing golf and working in his shop behind the house within earshot of Sarah when she needed him.

His family is indebted to his caregivers during the last year: Mary Whittington, Helen Jacobs, and Carol and Eric Ferrel. They cared for him in a compassionate and willing manner. And we thank you for that. Sam's family appreciates the health care that the Veteran's Administration has provided for him during the last three years.

Memorials may be made to Spring Hill Baptist Church, P. O. Box 195, Wagram, NC 28396.

Richard Boles Funeral Service of Laurinburg and Lancaster Funeral Service of Lancaster, S.C. are handling the arrangements for the family.
