LAURINBURG — William "Grady" Hamby, Sr., age 82 of Laurinburg, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2014.
Grady was a son of the late Romie and Hattie Holder Hamby, born September 17, 1931.
He retired from Electrical Equipment Company in 1996. He served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1955, and it was while stationed in Tampa that he met Joyce. He was a generous and kind man with a warm sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was also predeceased by his brother, Wayburn Hamby and sister, JoAnne H. Kaylor.
He is survived by Joyce Shaw Hamby, his loving wife of 59 years of their home; his son, William Hamby, Jr. (Vichele) of Kannaplis, NC, daughters, Sandy Carter (Charles) of Laurinburg, NC, Teresa Hamby (Colin Campbell) of Woodstown, NJ; grandsons, Clint, Christopher and Bradley Carter and granddaughters, Nelia Willis (Robert) and Maren Hamby. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Martha Hamby, Johanna Aplin, Lola Sides and Sandra Gonzalez, brothers-in-law Robert Holsomback and B.W. Kaylor, Jr., as well as many nieces, nephews, special friends and neighbors.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Laurinburg with a visitation to follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
A memorial service and burial will be held in Grady's childhood community of Patterson, NC at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Yadkin Baptist Church on Roby Martin Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Laurinburg or Yadkin Baptist Church in Patterson.
