Edward Marshall Conrad
Edward M. Conrad was born August 16, 1918 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He passed away peacefully in his apartment on February 19, 2013 where he enjoyed his view from the 12th floor and is now with his Lord and Savior. He was the only child of William and Anna Hanisch Conrad of Swiss descent. Ed grew up in Cedar Rapids where he attended school and later graduated from college. At the onset of World War ll, Ed was inducted into the Army and served as a Medic in Honolulu, Hawaii. After the war, he came to California from Iowa to teach school. He taught Jr. High in San Pedro and then moved to Long Beach Unified where he taught Special Education, and retired from Nightingale School. He married his wife, Gloria in 1965. Together for over 30 years, they traveled, volunteered their time and enjoyed Bridge. They were members of numerous organizations: Sons of Norway Lodge in Placentia, Haylofters Square Dance Club, The Steel Magnolias, California Retired Teachers, Cal Heights Methodist Church, and St. Mary Medical Center Hospice fundraising. Until recently, Ed volunteered three days a week in the Radiology Department of Lakewood Regional Hospital and received his 25 year pin. In the Sons of Norway, he participated in Tubfrim, a stamp cutting project to benefit the handicap children in Norway, and helped to sell Rosettes and Viking Helmets at the International Orange Street Fair held each Labor Day weekend. At St. Mary he was known as Mr. Martini, donating monies to have an ice sculpture Martini Bar as a part of the fundraiser helping to raise significant funds each year. His wife, Gloria, preceded him in death February, 1996. Ed cherished his lifelong friends and new ones he met throughout his travels. He loved life and was known for his compassion, celebratory spirit and philanthropy. Ed proudly traveled to every continent in the world and continued to travel throughout his whole life. As he said, India was next on the list. Ed leaves cousins, Larry DeLancy and Karen Humbert of Oregon, Jean Menster of Iowa; Gloria's niece, Sharon Fulton and her daughter Kimberly. He also leaves behind hundreds of friends that will hold him dearly in their hearts forever. Donations may be made in his memory to Long Beach City College- Foundation Department/Scholarships, St. Mary Medical Center/Auction, The Steel Magnolias of Long Beach Memorial Hospital, or the Long Beach Council of Boy Scouts. By request no services were held. Burial is in the family plot in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rest in peace, Ed. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obits.

Here's to you, Ed! Cool, casual, and considerate. A fellow retired Long Beach Unified School teacher and Phools and Filosfers member, your presence will be missed, Ed, but your spirit remains firmly in place.

I knew Ed for over fifteen years. I worked with him at Lakewood. He was the most generous, kind-hearted person I've ever known. When he traveled, he would bring me back beautiful stationery from different countries because he knew how much I loved uniquely designed paper. Ed was so thoughtful-always asking "how's that boy of yours?" Also, he always gave me a funny birthday card each year. Ed had such a great sense of humor and his cheery spirit was contagious. I am one of those who will always hold Ed' s memory forever in my heart. It's a wonderful joy to know that he is home with our Lord Jesus Christ. Love you Ed! Marcella Cazares-Cabus

Dear ED, We will miss you, you have always been so thoughtful to my grand children. You got them started on collecting 2.00 bills, you brought them many things from the many places you went to. And all you wanted back was Peanut Butter Bars. We were lucky to have you as our neighbor. You will be missed by all of us. Love The Galits
