Judith Haiwick Obituary

Judith Jeanette Haiwick

Judith Jeanette Haiwick, age 68, of Long Beach, CA, died on August 6, 2013. Judy was born April 3, 1945 in Fergus Falls, MN, the youngest daughter of Ingvald and Della (Morrill) Haiwick. She was baptized and confirmed at Vining Lutheran Church, Vining, MN and grew up on a farm near Vining. With her parents, she also lived for brief periods in Montana and South Dakota where her mother taught school. She attended Battle Lake High School, Battle Lake, MN, from 1959 to 1961, then moved to Tucson, AZ with her sister, Ruth, graduating from Catalina High School in 1963. Judy attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, from 1963 to 1964, as a National Merit Scholar. While at Coe she served as editor of the college newspaper, the Coe Cosmos. She transferred to the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she graduated in 1967. She earned a master's degree in Early Medieval English Language and Literature from the University of Arizona in 1969. While studying for her master's degree, she worked for the Arizona Daily Star. Judy continued her studies in Early English at the University of California-Riverside. In 1977, Judy began work at Northrop Grumman Corporation, where she was employed for thirty years, retiring in 2007. Her jobs included working as an instruction manual writer and industrial engineer. Judy was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Long Beach, CA, where she served in various leadership capacities. A great love of her life was creating and writing for her web site, sundayschoollessons.com. She was thrilled to provide this resource of Sunday School material which received more than 4,000,000 views around the world. Another deeply satisfying part of her life was her volunteer work as a docent at the Long Beach Museum of Art, especially being involved with children's art workshops. In 2010, Judy suffered a series of strokes. With the help of her devoted caregiver Flor, she was eventually able to resume some of her former activities. Judy is survived by her sisters, Ruth Myrvold, Tucson, AZ and Nora (Verlyn) Lindell, Sioux Falls, SD; nephews, Doug Myrvold and Jim Myrvold; nieces, Karin Lindell and Lisa Lindell; six great nieces and nephews and six great-great nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church at Carson and Cherry on August 21st at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Minnesota. Judy was a high school and college friend of mine who turned into a lifelong chum; a dear person whose upbeat look at life was always a welcome and jovial interlude from the busy and complicated lives we built for ourselves. She was like part of my family; my Dad even helped her find her first car. Over the years we visited one another. I have a particularly fond memory of visiting her while my husband was in Vietnam. She took me to a production of Hair but she bought tickets in the last row so we wouldn't be embarrassed by the nude scene at the end! We also explored the LA garment district, the art museums, La Brea Tar Pits, and more over the years. She loved Northrup and was totally dedicated to the company in a way I think most people never grasp. She found opportunities to grow her amazing mind within that corporate culture. Though we didn't see one another often, I will miss her in my life. Hers was too short.

Sorry to hear about Judy's death. I worked as a proofreader under her leadership at Northrop Aircraft during the early '80 and we kept in touch when I moved back to Mississippi. She even came for a visit one time and we had a good time in New Orleans. Judy was well read and just about one of the smartest people I know. She was definitely the fastest reader I ever saw and could remember everything she read. I always looked forward to her Christmas letter and all the excitement she had for her brothers, sisters, cousins and other family members. She loved Minnesota and often talked about her farm and the way of life there. And her SundaySchoolLessons website was one of her favorite things. Judy will be greatly missed and I'm sure she's in the arms of God and experiencing a great rest.

Judy was a grade school classmate and friend. She was uniquely intelligent and gifted, but gregarious and friendly at all times. I regret that I didn't see her when she last visited in Minnesota . My condolences to her sisters.

I had the great pleasure of knowing Judy through her volunteer work at the Long Beach Museum of Art where she was a valued docent. My sympathy to her family members. We miss her at the Museum. She was always so positive and enthusiastic about the art program and the children's introduction to art. Docents are the face of the Museum, and Judy's smiling face and her teaching were a big contribution to the Museum's education program.

I was so sorry and surprised to hear of Judy's passing. She had come such a long way since her stroke. Condolences to her family. I worked with her for many years and considered her a good friend. May she be at peace with the Lord.
