Alfred Roy Phillips

Alfred Roy Phillips passed away on August 25, 2013, at the age of 85, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. He was born on September 18, 1927, in Long Beach, the son of Elmer and Edna Phillips. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1949 as a combat air crewman. He attended LBCC and CSULB. He was an elementary school teacher and administrator, retiring in 1990. As a part-time employee, Roy worked 10 years at Disneyland. He was a longtime volunteer at the Long Beach Symphony, docent at Rancho Los Alamitos, and volunteered over 40 years in various capacities with the Boy Scouts in Long Beach. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Nancy; his sons, Greg (Patty) and David (Kim); along with nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Ted (Marge) Phillips; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by daughters Pamela Jean Wendlandt and Janice Ann McDonald. He enjoyed RV traveling, woodworking, and model railroading. Roy remains a part of his family and friends he knew and touched with his quiet strength, humor and love. A memorial service will be held at Grace First Presbyterian Church, 3955 Studebaker Rd., Long Beach, CA 90808 at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 22.
