ALICE SHIRLEY (SCOTT) LAYMAN
Alice Layman, age 80, passed away at her home in La Verne on Thursday, January, 9 2014.
Born on January 2, 1934 near Black Creek in Maine, Wisconsin, Alice grew up on a family farm with her father Gaylord and mother Louise (Burton), brothers Royce and Floyd and sisters Martha, Dorothy, Leona, Lorraine and Bonnie.
Attending a one room schoolhouse in rural Wisconsin, Alice graduated from high school in 1952. Demonstrating her strong spirit of self-reliance, in 1957 she left Wisconsin and moved to Los Angeles to work as a reservations agent for Western Airlines. She returned to school in 1975 and enjoyed a successful and satisfying career as a real estate agent for Landmark Century 21 in La Verne until her retirement in 1993.
A resident of La Verne since 1972, Alice is survived by her husband Paul of 54 years, four children (Michael (Leslie) of Yorba Linda, Diane (Tim) of Casablanca, Morocco, Gregory of La Verne and Jeffrey (Fumiyo) of Beijing, China), eight grandchildren (Chelsea, Nicholas, Kevin, Chloe Louise, Luke, Louis, Zachery and Yuki) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Over the years of her retirement she enjoyed numerous excursions and cruises around the United States and overseas to six continents. An avid bowler for over fifty years, she and her husband Paul recently won 1st. Place Sr. Funtimers at Chaparrel Lanes San Dimas. A wonderful grandmother who showered each of her eight grandchildren with love and devotion, she lived a rich life filled with the happiness of watching her family grow and prosper.
Her memorial will be held on Thursday, January 16 at the Queen of Heaven Mortuary at 2161 S. Fullerton Road in Rowland Heights. The visitation is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with the funeral mass from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by the rite of committal.
