Dave M. Johnson
Longtime resident of Upland passed away on October 16th, 2013. Dave was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 9th, 1921. He was preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Pearl Johnson, and his sister Marjorie and is survived by his wife Sheila Johnson, son Christopher Johnson (Peggy), and spiritually adopted children C.B. Johnson, Kathy Skorstad, (Ron and Max), and David Cherry.
Dave was kind, charismatic, and charming; beloved by many and his memory will be cherished by all whom he encountered.
Dave and his family moved to Duluth, Minnesota. At a young age Dave developed a passion for all sports. He lettered in High School for playing tennis and basketball; and was All County in football. Upon graduation from Duluth Central High School, Dave attended the University of Minnesota. In 1946 he took a troop train and moved to Southern California after he learned about the "beautiful year-round sunshine," and settled in a boarding house in downtown L.A. While staying at the boarding house, he met his first wife Marcelle. They married and had their son Christopher.
He worked at various jobs "pinching pennies" seeking to follow his father's advice to "never work for anyone" and became an entrepreneur. Of several businesses, he was a franchise owner of an A&W Root beer stand on the corner of Campus and Foothill in Upland; later, Ontario Travel Agencies, Pepe's Restaurant, Dave Johnson Bail Bonds, and founded and developed the Upland Tennis Club.
His other passions were music, reading, politics, and traveling. His sense of adventure and love of traveling led him to travel throughout Europe, United States, Russia, and Mexico. His passion for golf brought him to his favorite place, Scotland, with his close friend, the late Judge Garner.
Dave was a firm believer that staying fit and active was the key to longevity. Daily, Dave stayed active by going to L.A. Fitness, playing tennis, or golf.
He lived the latter part of his life doing the things he loved the most, including an annual trip with family and friends to Maui to play tennis and enjoy the beauty of the island. Often, he traveled with his golf buddies and played golf, tennis, and poker.
He donated his body to Western University of Health Sciences for scientific research. A celebration of his life will be held on November 9th, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Upland Tennis Club for family and friends.
Throughout most of his life, Dave generously donated in support of the caring of the homeless. If you wish to support his passion, donations can be sent to the Foothill Family Shelter or Covenant House in his memory. Foothill Family ShelterCovenant House,1501West 9th Street, Suite D 1325 W.
