THOMAS, Donald Kirk
On Thanksgiving morning, November 22, 2012, Donald Kirk Thomas, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully in hospice care in the presence of family at his home in Pasadena, CA.
Born on December 7, 1927, to Donald Kirk Thomas, Sr.andLeta Marie Nichols Thomas in Los Angeles, CA, Don graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1945 and from the University of Southern California in 1950. He enjoyed competing in track and field events and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He served in the US Navy
from 1952 to 1954 and began his business career with IBM in 1954. In 1965, he took a management position with a corrugated box manufacturer, Fiber Containers, and in 1973 became president and CEO of Southwest Partition, Inc., a manufacturer of office partitions.
Don married Jane Moore in Arcadia, CA on June 9, 1956, and they raised their family in South Pasadena, CA, where he coached Little League, was the starter for swim meets, and was active with the YMCA, Oneonta Club and the United Methodist Church. In their empty nest years, the Thomas' had a second home in Bear Valley Springs near Tehachapi, CA that became a favorite gathering spot for family and friends. They later moved into the City of Tehachapi where Don was a volunteer assistant coach for the Tehachapi High School track and field team and an active member of Grace Fellowship Church.
Don is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane Moore Thomas; daughter Linda (Roger) Smith of Newton, IA; daughter Pam (Rob) Harrison of Arcadia, CA; son Kirk (Christine)Thomas of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren Susan and Christopher Harrison; step-grandchildren Amanda Smith of Midway, PA, and Adam (Chrissy) Smith of Lynnville, IA; and three step-great-grandchildren.
A remembrance service will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in Sierra Madre, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the
, Convalescent Aid Society, or the Salvation Army.
