MARTHA LACKEY MILES
Was born on February 13, 1924 to Joe and Divina Lackey in Colorado Springs, CO. She passed away in Redlands, CA on September 8, 2013.
During World War II, Martha joined the Women's Army Corps as a registered nurse, and it was at Camp Carson, CO that she met Richard Miles, who was there on his first duty assignment after graduation from West Point. They became engaged but were separated for the duration of the War when Dick was sent to the European Theater and was captured by the German Army. After the War, Dick made his way back to Colorado where, in 1945, he and Martha were married and began their life as a military family. The Army took them all over the world, but it was probably their three years in England that Martha most enjoyed. And it was Dick's final assignment at Norton Air Force Base that brought the Miles family to Redlands, where Martha and Dick spent the rest of their days. Not only did Martha work for nearly 20 years in the Pediatric Unit at Redlands Community Hospital, but her tireless heart for service also led to volunteering wherever she saw the need.
The past few years have not been easy for Martha, but she is now at peace in the Lord's care. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dick, her son Paul and is survived by her brother, Joe Lackey, her children, Jane (and Garry), Julia (and Rich), David (and Debbie), John (and Donna), Mark (and Carol), Paul's wife, Bobbi, and a family of eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The First Baptist Church of Redlands, 51 W. Olive Ave., was an important part of Martha and Dick's life, and Martha's memorial service will be held in the sanctuary there on Tuesday, 24 September 2013, at 1:00 pm. After receiving military honors, she will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to First Baptist Church or to Redlands Hospice, c/o Redlands Community Hospital Foundation, 350 Terracina Blvd, Redlands, CA 92373.
Those whom Martha has left behind will miss her wisdom, spirit and love. Hers was a life well lived.
