THOMAS K. BURSCH
Resident of Tujunga
Tom Kermit Bursch, of Tujunga, beloved husband of Sandy Bursch, father to Scott, Kimberly and Sean, grandfather to Kim's sons Gage and Mason and Scott's daughters Bridget, Amber, and Sierra, died at the age of 78, Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Kaiser Hospital in Panorama City, after a long illness. He's preceded in death by his parents, brother Jim Bursch and daughter Kim.
Tom was born to Kermit and Marian (Hansen) Bursch in Scanlon, Minnesota. He spent his youth in Duluth, Minnesota, Rock Island, Illinois, and Virginia, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school. Active in scouting with Jim, both were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Both Tom and Jim were active in DeMolay. Tom attended the University of Minnesota
where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After working a year in Iowa, Tom moved to California where he earned his Masters at UCLA
while working as an Electrical Engineer and Project Manager for Hughes Aircraft, Litton Industries and JPL. One of his last projects at JPL was the development of the Wide Field Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Tom was passionate about music, and played tenor and baritone saxophone as well as alto clarinet in numerous bands throughout his life - high school, DeMolay and city bands in Virginia, the University of Minnesota Marching Band, and later, in jazz bands in and around Tujunga. Tom was a member of The Glen Roberts Band, The Burbank Concert Band, Verdugo Swings Society Band, Wilkinson's Band, and founded his own octet.
He enjoyed hiking in and around Mammoth Mountain and Z-Lake, backpacking in the the Sierras with his family, and watching his adopted grandsons, Gage and Mason excel in sports. Tom was also an active member of the Panorama City Chapter of Grandparents as Parents.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Bursch of Tujunga; sons, Scott (Heather) of Gig Harbor, Wash., Sean of Tujunga; brother, John (Nancy) Bursch of Martinez, Calif.; sister-in-law, Carole Carlson-Bursch of Babbitt, Minn.; grandchildren, Gage and Mason, Bridget, Amber, and Sierra; many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
Services: A remembrance will be held Sunday, April 13th, 3:30 to 7:00 p.m., at the Angeles National Golf Club, 9401 Foothill Blvd. Sunland, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Panorama City Chapter of Grandparents as Parents (www.GrandparentsAsParents.org
