CSULB professor Dr. John "Jack" Nygaard was born in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in Atlantic, Iowa. As a high school athlete he won the Iowa state championship in the 100 yard hurdles. He was a graduate of the College of Wooster in Ohio, earned his PhD in psychology at the University of Illinois, and taught at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. A fan of jazz music and a collector of Southwest Native American pottery, Jack worked in the Pentagon during World War II. He came to California to work at Hughes Aircraft and later teach as a professor at California State University of Long Beach, serving many years as chair of the Psychology Department. He met Karen Lafky on a cycling trip in France in 1992 and they married shortly thereafter. He will be missed by many including his three sons, their spouses, eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach at 5450 East Atherton Street on Saturday January 25, 2014 at 2 pm.
